I’m often asked what kind of camera I use and which I would recommend. You can do (street) photography with any camera, doesn’t matter if it’s a point-and-shoot or a rangefinder, if it’s a Nikon or Canon, digital or analog. Just start shooting, don’t worry so much about the gear. Use what you have. If you are about to invest in a new camera, decide between digital and analog, buy an entry level (D)SLR, invest more in the lens than in a body, preferably a prime lens (50mm or wider) and then shoot as much as you can.
If you are serious about street photography, think about getting a rangefinder. I use a rangefinder and it’s perfect for street shooting. It’s quiet, unobstrusive and the viewfinder doesn’t go black the moment you release since it has no mirror. You see what you capture.
