iesvsvilla asked: Hello I love your photos! Any recommendations or advice as to shooting street photography? I sometimes want to take pictures of strangers but I don't know how to approach them. Thanks.

Thanks! It’s normal to feel uncomfortable at the beginning, but it goes away, the more you shoot. I don’t shoot street portraits, so I don’t really have to approach people, but here’s how I shoot:

The trick is to move constantly, do not stop any longer than a couple of seconds, do not look at your lcd screen (if you’re shooting digital), because then people will know that you’ve taken a picture. I usually don’t make eye contact with my subjects and I try to move quickly after I have taken a shot. Usually people don’’t notice me or by the time they notice, I’m already gone. When I get really close, people think that I’m shooting something behind them. When they do notice, most people are cool about it, it always depends a bit on in which city or neighborhood I shoot, but in general people have been kind.

I avoid situations which could be interpreted as intrusive or offending, I don’t provoke and I try not to stick my camera in people’s faces. It helps to think that you’re not doing something illegal or secret, rather try to think that you’re out there to capture something beautiful and human. If somebody asks, be open about what you do, explain it and/or give them your card.

Also, it helps to start with a normal focal length before going wide, I started out with a 50mm and then moved to 35mm, sometimes 28mm.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!
